Tommy John surgery–the reconstruction of the ulnar collateral ligament on the elbow–is something that every pitcher might face in his life because pitching generates enough force to create a rupture. The 22 year old Stephen Strasburg underwent the surgery 18 months ago, and on April 2, 2012, fans surged to watch the Nationals star. However, it is not likely that Strasburg will ever play a full season again. Experts suggest that his shoulder and elbow will be too much under stress from the surgery and the required effort for a winning pitch. Furthermore, more pitches may only worsen his elbow.
